How to Improve Your Express Entry CRS Score

By Harpreet Grewal, RCIC (#R710447) · May 2026

Your Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score is the number that determines when — and whether — you receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for Canadian permanent residence through Express Entry. Understanding how CRS points are awarded is the first step toward improving your score.

What Is the CRS and How Does It Work?

The CRS awards points based on four core factors for single applicants (maximum 500 points without additional points) and four factors for applicants with a spouse or common-law partner (maximum 460 points plus up to 40 for the spouse). Additional points can bring the total to 1,200, with provincial nominations alone adding 600 points.

IRCC holds draws periodically, inviting the highest-scoring candidates from the Express Entry pool. Minimum CRS scores vary by draw type and current immigration targets.

1. Maximize Your Language Scores

Language is the single largest controllable factor in your CRS score. A Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) level 9 or higher in all four skills (reading, writing, listening, speaking) is what most applicants should target.

  • English: IELTS General Training or CELPIP. Aim for 7.5+ in each band on IELTS (CLB 9).
  • French: TEF Canada or TCF Canada. Speaking French can add significant bonus points under the French language factor (up to 50 for strong bilingual candidates).
  • Retake your test if any score is below CLB 9 — the improvement in CRS points can be substantial.

2. Credential Assessment (ECA)

If your education was obtained outside Canada, you need an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) from a designated organization. The ECA must confirm that your credential is equivalent to a Canadian credential. Make sure your ECA covers all your highest completed credentials — a Master's or PhD provides more CRS points than a Bachelor's degree alone.

3. Gain Canadian Work Experience

Canadian work experience adds significant CRS points as a standalone factor and through the Canadian Experience Class (CEC) pathway. If you are currently working in Canada on a work permit, your CEC eligibility improves with each additional year of skilled Canadian work experience. Even one year of CEC-qualifying experience can substantially improve your CRS score.

4. Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs): The +600 Boost

A provincial nomination through an Express Entry-aligned stream adds 600 CRS points — virtually guaranteeing an ITA in the next draw. If your score is not high enough for a federal draw, explore PNP streams in provinces like Ontario (OINP), British Columbia (BC PNP), Alberta (AAIP), and Saskatchewan (SINP). Many provinces have streams targeting specific occupations or individuals with ties to the province.

5. Spouse Skills Transfer

If your spouse or common-law partner is included in your Express Entry profile, their language skills and Canadian work experience can add transferability points to your total. Ensure your spouse also takes an approved language test — even modest scores can add meaningful points.

6. Siblings in Canada

If you have a sibling who is a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, you can claim 15 additional CRS points. This is often overlooked but can make a difference in competitive draw environments.

7. A Valid Job Offer

A qualifying Canadian job offer adds 50 points (or 200 points for senior management roles). The job offer must be LMIA-exempt or supported by an LMIA to qualify. An RCIC can help you assess whether your offer qualifies and how to document it properly.
