Visitor Visa vs. eTA: Which Do You Need?

Temporary Resident Visa (TRV)

Required by citizens of most countries when travelling to Canada by air, land, or sea. A TRV is a stamp or sticker placed in your passport by a Canadian visa office.

Typically valid for up to 10 years or one month before passport expiry, with multiple entries allowed.

Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA)

Required by visa-exempt foreign nationals (except US citizens) flying to or transiting through Canada. Simpler to obtain than a TRV.

Valid for up to 5 years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first.

Super Visa: Extended Stays for Parents & Grandparents

The Super Visa is a multi-entry visa allowing parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens or permanent residents to stay in Canada for up to 5 years at a time (recently extended from 2 years). It is valid for up to 10 years.

Visitor Visa — Frequently Asked Questions

How long can I stay in Canada on a visitor visa?

Most visitor visas are issued as multiple-entry visas valid for up to 10 years or until your passport expires. Each entry typically allows a stay of up to 6 months, as determined by the border officer at the port of entry. You can apply to extend your stay from within Canada if needed.

What documents do I need for a Canada visitor visa application?

Required documents typically include a valid passport, completed application forms, biometrics, proof of financial support, ties to your home country (employment, property, family), travel history, and a letter of invitation if visiting family. An RCIC can review your specific situation and ensure your package is complete.

What is a Super Visa and how is it different from a visitor visa?

A Super Visa is a special multi-entry visa specifically for parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens or permanent residents. It allows stays of up to 5 years per entry (compared to 6 months on a regular visitor visa) and is valid for up to 10 years. Applicants must have proof of private medical insurance from a Canadian provider.

Can I extend my visitor visa while in Canada?

Yes, you can apply to extend your visitor status from within Canada before your current status expires. You must apply before your authorized stay ends. If you apply on time, you are considered to have maintained legal status while your extension is being processed (maintained status / implied status).
