Canada Study Permit: Study Here, Stay Here

From application support to post-graduation pathways, our Licensed RCIC guides international students from study permit to permanent residence.

Who Needs a Study Permit?

Any international student planning to study at a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) in Canada for more than 6 months requires a study permit. DLIs include Canadian universities, colleges, and certain language schools approved by their provincial or territorial government.

Study Permit Requirements

  • Acceptance letter from a DLI
  • Proof of sufficient funds for tuition and living
  • Valid passport
  • Clean criminal record (police certificate if required)
  • Proof of ties to home country (intent to leave after studies)
  • Medical examination (if required)

Student Direct Stream (SDS)

Eligible applicants from certain countries can apply through the Student Direct Stream for faster processing. SDS requires:

  • Canadian Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC)
  • First year tuition payment proof
  • Language test results (IELTS 6.0+ or equivalent)
  • Upfront medical exam

After Graduation: Your Path to PR

Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP)

If you complete a program of at least 8 months at an eligible DLI, you may qualify for a PGWP that allows you to work in Canada. The permit length is equal to your program duration, up to 3 years.

Express Entry via CEC

After gaining at least one year of skilled work experience in Canada with your PGWP, you may qualify for the Canadian Experience Class (CEC) under Express Entry — a major pathway to permanent residence.

Study Permit — Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a study permit for short courses in Canada?

You do not need a study permit for courses or programs six months or shorter. If your program is longer than six months, a study permit is required before you arrive in Canada. An RCIC can advise on whether your specific program requires a permit.

Can I work in Canada while studying?

Most full-time students at Designated Learning Institutions (DLIs) can work up to 24 hours per week off-campus during academic sessions and full-time during scheduled breaks, without a separate work permit. Conditions are set on your study permit.

What is the Student Direct Stream (SDS)?

The Student Direct Stream is a faster processing stream for study permit applicants from certain countries, including India, China, and the Philippines. Applicants must meet specific requirements including an IELTS score of 6.0 in each band and a Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC).

Can a study permit lead to permanent residence in Canada?

Yes. After graduating, most international students can apply for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP). This Canadian work experience can make you eligible for Express Entry (Canadian Experience Class) or Provincial Nominee Programs — both leading to permanent residence.
